[Okami HD]Okami finally becomes a million seller video game

Amaterasu finally made it over the line

It’s taken 13 years but Capcom’s Zelda-esque classic has finally joined the million seller club, but does that make Okami 2 any more likely?

First released on PlayStation 2 in 2006, Okami has appeared on almost every format since, the most recent being a Nintendo Switch version.

Despite critical praise, and being a firm fan favourite, it’s never been especially successful though, as evident by the fact that it’s only just passed the 1 million sales mark.

That’s still significant though and comes only a few weeks after PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamiya, who directed the original, said he was working on a sequel.

Kamiya says a lot of things though, most of it trolling, so that doesn’t count as an official announcement, even though he’s been talking about wanting to make a sequel for years.

According to Capcom’s own sales results page ‘sales of more than one million units is the generally accepted standard for a major hit’, so there is that in its favour.

The list of their most successful titles was recently updated and has last year’s Monster Hunter: World as their biggest seller ever, on 14.1 million.

Okami ranks as their 88th most successful title, just behind Final Fight 2 on the SNES. It’s actually listed as Okami HD though, so whether the 1 million sales is just the remasters isn’t clear but the original release can’t have sold much as it’s not included anywhere else on the list.

Capcom recently said they were looking to resurrect a number of their older franchises, particularly given the success of the Resident Evil 2 remake, so if there’s any chance for a new Okami sequel this would be the moment.

  1. Monster Hunter: World (PS4/Xbox One/PC/DL) – 14.1 million

  2. Resident Evil 5 (PS3/Xbox 360/DL) – 7.5 million

  3. Resident Evil 6 (PS3/Xbox 360/DL) – 7.4 million

  4. Resident Evil 7 biohazard (PS4/Xbox One/PC/DL) – 6.8 million

  5. Street Fighter II (SNES) – 6.3 million

  6. Resident Evil 2 (PS) – 4.96 million

  7. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (PSP/DL) – 4.9 million

  8. Resident Evil 2 (PS4/Xbox One/PC/DL) – 4.7 million

  9. Monster Hunter Generations (3DS/DL) – 4.3 million

  10. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (3DS/DL) – 4.2 million

DL (full-game download) includes PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, WiiWare, and all digital download units on Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and PC, etc.
